Welcome to HEKSS School of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The school was established as an independent school in 2011 although previously we had provided the training programme in collaboration with South London for many years.
We aim to provide high quality comprehensive and patient centered training in obstetrics and gynaecology. Our trainees rotate through units in Kent, Surrey and Sussex offering a full range of opportunities to fulfill the needs of the RCOG curriculum. We provide a programme of regional training days to complement teaching in each trust. We aim to develop doctors’ communication and leadership skills throughout their training so that they will become excellent consultants in the future.
Our training programme is supported by RCOG tutors in each trust who ensure that a high standard of educational supervision is provided for every trainee. The head of school, training programme directors, simulation and ultrasound leads meet with the RCOG tutors and trainee representatives on a regular basis to ensure information and ideas are shared from RCOG. All educational supervisors are offered an annual update of the latest developments to ensure the highest standards of training in every trust.
Trainee representation is considered a vital component of a good training programme and we have an active group of trainee reps.
The school has an excellent simulation training programme with opportunities for simulation training in obstetrics, gynaecology and ultrasound. Many training opportunities focus on multidisciplinary team working and human factors training. The importance of good communication skills is recognised and specific training is offered supported by patients sharing their experience of healthcare. The school has run a mentoring programme for new recruits for 2 years and hope to continue to develop this.
